How Does The Heat Pump Work?
In heating mode, the heat pump extracts heat from the outdoor air (or the ground, in the case of a ground-source heat pump) and transfers it to the indoor air. This is accomplished by circulating a refrigerant through a closed loop that consists of an outdoor coil, an indoor coil, and a compressor. The refrigerant absorbs heat from the outdoor air and carries it indoors, where it releases the heat into the indoor air.
In cooling mode, the process is reversed. The heat pump extracts heat from the indoor air and transfers it to the outdoor air. The refrigerant absorbs heat from the indoor air and carries it outdoors, where it releases the heat into the outdoor air.
How Does The Heat Pump Work?
Air-source heat pumps
These are the most commonly used heat pumps, which work by extracting heat from the outside air and transferring it into the home. Air-source heat pumps can provide both heating and cooling, and they are most effective in moderate climates where the temperature rarely drops below freezing.
Ground-source (geothermal) heat pumps
These heat pumps use the stable temperature of the ground or a nearby water source to transfer heat into or out of the home. They are more expensive to install than air-source heat pumps but can be more efficient, especially in colder climates.
Absorption heat pumps
These heat pumps use heat as their energy source instead of electricity. They are often used in industrial settings, but some residential models are available. Absorption heat pumps can be powered by natural gas, propane, or solar-heated water, but they are less efficient than electric heat pumps.
